Choosing Your Vibrant Slice of Color

I am drawn to bold, big color. Color makes me very happy. It moves me to action, relaxation, motivation, creativity and the list goes on. It has played a big role in my life since I was in elementary school. My grandma gave me a scrap book that I filled with posters, newpaper articles, cards and of course paint chips. The paint chips took up a majority of those pages. (FYI- I still collect paint chips today and browse through them frequently.)

Does choosing the right color for your dye, knit or crochet project leave you overwhelmed?

Here are some things that you should not do when choosing color.
1. Fear color
2. Over think your color choices
3. Feel that it is too much hassle
4. Leave it to someone else to choose for you
5. Walk away

Yes, choosing the right color for you can be quite overwhelming.  You want to get the perfect color for that beautiful project.  But somewhere there is a perfect color for you.  One that hits you like a ton of bricks and it would kill you to leave it sitting on the shelf at your LYS.  =)  You know what I am talking about.

Have you ever thought of what you could do to choose that perfect color?

Here are some tips to help you on your way.

  1. Don’t fear color.  What I mean by that is don’t stick with your simple black and white.  It’s okay if that is where you are comfortable, but next time try adding another color with that.  Use your black and white as a base color and start trying others out.
  2. Don’t over think your color choices.  If you didn’t like the color in the first place, chances are you are not attracted to it.  It does help to have a partner in yarn stash crime to help you in deciding.  Trust your initial gut answer.  You already know what colors you enjoy and what you don’t.
  3. Don’t feel that it’s too much hassle. Choosing the right color can be quite a scary experience. What do you do when you invested all that time into that project and you don’t like the color?   What you can do is clip pictures of magazines that inspire you. You can also use pinterest and fiber books to gain ideas.  What colors are you drawn to when you go cloths shopping?  What colors have your friends complimented you on?When choosing color, choose what speaks to you.  There are colors that attract you and no one else.  They are unique to your personality.
  4. There are times where you feel like throwing your hands up in the air and walking away.  There is nothing wrong with taking a break to clear your head, but then come back to it.  At times you are attracted to colors that follow the seasons.  What season are you in at the moment.  Is it fall where you love the yellows, oranges and reds or is the season spring where the colors lean toward pastels and bright ones.

Choosing the right color is so important.  Color helps create emotion, pleases the eyes, quietly speaks.  Look around you.  You are surrounded by color all the time.
