Make Your Own Homemade Apple Pie Filling

I absolutely love this recipe I am about to share with you.  Besides making a mouthwatering apple pie filling, we are creating many family memories. It’s such a delight to work with my family through the whole process.

I suggest to gather 2+ people in your family arsenal to tackle this fun recipe.

My wonderful SIL shared it with me 3 years ago. I have been gathering the family every year since to  whip up  some of this warm apple delight.

It is so much fun to be able to go into my pantry and pull out this apple pie filling that is ready to be served as pie, apple goodie or to be warmed up and poured over vanilla ice cream (my favorite).

6 quarts of apples (I do put a bit more in mine)

5 1/2 cups of Sugar

1 1/2 cups clear jel

1 Tablespoon cinnamon

1 tsp of Nutmeg (opt)

2 1/2 cups cold water

4 cups of apple juice (I use apple cider)

3/4 cup bottled lemon juice

Peel and core apples, slice and place in antidarkening solution. (fruit fresh mixed in a bowl of water) drain well.

Combine sugar, large Clear Jel, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large pot with water, and apple juice.  Stir and cook on medium high heat until mixture thickens and begins to bubble.  Add lemon juice to the boiling mixture and boil 1 minute, stirring constantly.  Immediately fold in drained apple slices and fill hot jars with hot mixture. Leave 1 inch of head space.

Remove air bubbles.  Wipe jar rims.  Adjust lids and process immediately in a boiling water bath for 25 minutes.
